Learning Objectives:
  1. Provide the framework for the interpretation of gastric mucosal biopsies, common specimens providing many challenges to the practicing pathologist.
  2. Emphasize the importance of the striking differences in the microscopic anatomy and the related physiology between proximal and distal stomach. Awareness of these regional differences greatly affects and enhances biopsy interpretation.
  3. Enhance the bidirectional communication between gastroenterologist and pathologist. Good communication between these physicians greatly enhances diagnostic accuracy and is of significant benefit to subsequent patient care.
