A Pattern-Based Approach to Soft Tissue Tumors

Course Description
The diagnosis of soft tissue tumors can be a significant challenge even to the experienced surgical pathologist, largely due to the broad morphological spectrum of tumor types and overlap with both other soft tissue tumors and non-mesenchymal neoplasms. Furthermore, shared immunohistochemical features as well as genetic changes are common. While current classification schemes guide the organization of most soft tissue tumors based on the line of differentiation exhibited by the tumor cells, for many soft tissue tumors the lineage is not intuitively obvious, and many tumors show a spectrum of morphologic features that can make recognition of the underlying differentiation difficult. This activity will provide a directed review of the most common types of soft tissue tumors using a pattern-based approach.

Target Audience
Practicing academic and community pathologists, and pathologists-in-training.

Learning Objectives
Upon completion of this educational activity, learners will be able to:
  • Recognize the predominant cytologic patterns exhibited by commonly encountered soft tissue tumors and formulate an appropriate differential diagnosis
  • Recognize the significance of clinical context in the interpretation of histologic findings
  • Incorporate appropriate ancillary diagnostic tests, e.g. immunohistochemistry and FISH, in the evaluation of soft tissue tumors, and recognize their strengths and limitations

The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.

The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology designates this enduring material for a maximum of 2 AMA PRA Category 1 CreditsTM. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

USCAP is approved by the American Board of Pathology (ABPath) to offer Self-Assessment credits (SAMs) and Lifelong Learning (Part II) credit for the purpose of meeting the ABPath requirements for Continuing Certification (CC). Registrants must take and pass the post-test in order to claim SAMs credit. Physicians can earn a maximum of 2 SAM/Part II credit hours.
